A trail of red brick fa\u00e7ades blazes through the city and makes up a large share of its archi\u00adtec\u00adtur\u00adal heritage.\n<p>Until today, bricks remain a favourite ele\u00adment of local fa\u00e7ade design both for res\u00adi\u00adden\u00adtial and com\u00admer\u00adcial build\u00adings. Hamburg\u2018s iden\u00adti\u00adty is found\u00aded on the var\u00adied shades of red of the brick fa\u00e7ades and the stur\u00addi\u00adness of the fired stone. Man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00ader Rusch burns the bricks in a tra\u00addi\u00adtion\u00adal ring kiln. The brick\u00adyard, found\u00aded in 1881, is the last of over 100 that exist\u00aded between Ham\u00adburg and Cux\u00adhaven in the sec\u00adond half of the 19th cen\u00adtu\u00adry. The skill and knowl\u00adedge required for pro\u00adcess\u00ading the nat\u00adur\u00adal mate\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal is passed on through generati-ons, and each of the hand-made bricks is unique. CLAY PRODUCTION<\/span><\/h4>[vc_column_text]Our bricks are a gen\u00aduine\u00adly nat\u00adur\u00adal prod\u00aduct, con\u00adsist\u00ading of 90% clay and 10% sand. Clay from the local Elb\u00admarsch region makes up about 90% of the clay component.[\/vc_column_text]<div class=\"grve-empty-space grve-height-1x\"><\/div><h4 class=\"grve-element grve-title grve-align-inherit grve-h4\"><span>02. PRODUCTION AND DRYING OF THE BLANKS<\/span><\/h4>[vc_column_text]The clay that is sourced is com\u00adbined and thor\u00adough\u00adly blend\u00aded with the sand, and com\u00adpressed to remove even the last impu\u00adri\u00adty. Once a strand of clay has been shaped, it is cut to the desired width. The blanks pro\u00adduced this way are then stacked and kept in dry\u00ading cham\u00adbers until they are ready to be fired.[\/vc_column_text]<div class=\"grve-empty-space grve-height-1x\"><\/div><h4 class=\"grve-element grve-title grve-align-inherit grve-h4\"><span>03. THE HISTORIC RING&nbsp;KILN<\/span><\/h4>[vc_column_text]Once dried, the unfin\u00adished bricks are brought to the cen\u00adtral piece of the brick\u00adyard: the ring kiln. They are man\u00adu\u00adal\u00adly loaded into the kiln and stacked, lay\u00ader by lay\u00ader, until they sit tight\u00adly under the ceil\u00ading. The kiln is fired, and the fire is kept burn\u00ading dur\u00ading the whole pro\u00adduc\u00adtion cycle, with not even a day\u2018s break. The mas\u00adters keep it burn\u00ading, care\u00adful\u00adly con\u00adtrol\u00adling it in the kiln, hour by hour, day by day, month by month. The bricks are fired fol\u00adlow\u00ading ancient tra\u00addi\u00adtions, using hard coal and wood. They are removed from the oven in the same way as they were loaded: by hand.
