The Hopfen\u00admarkt became the most impor- tant mar\u00adket in town dur\u00ading the 13th cen\u00adtu\u00adry, boas-ting up to 900 stalls in its hey\u00adday. It was par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly impor\u00adtant for beer brew\u00aders, who bought their hops here. How\u00adev\u00ader, the destruc\u00adtion brought about by World War II changed the urban land\u00adscape in Hamburg\u2018s old\u00adest part sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant\u00adly. Between 1958 and 1963, the broad street cut\u00adting from east to west known as Willy-Brandt-Strasse and Lud\u00adwig-Erhard-Strasse today was con\u00adstruct\u00aded, sev\u00ader\u00ading direct con\u00adnec\u00adtions to the neigh\u00adbour\u00adhoods south of the new road. This large\u00adly dis\u00adrupt\u00aded the qual\u00adi\u00adty of stay in these parts of town. The City of Ham\u00adburg has now decid\u00aded to rein\u00advig\u00ado\u00adrate the area.
